Ommegang Ommegeddon 2008 - Tasting and Cellaring Notes

Name: Ommegeddon

Brewer: Ommegang

Style: American Wild Ale

Vintage: 2008

Cellared On: July 7th, 2008

Original Tasting: August 28th, 2008

I have to admit I was a bit disappointed last year when I first tried Ommegeddon from brewery Ommegang. I found the flavors a bit muted, almost like the beer was deliberately brewed mildly hoping for the Brett flavors to fly in and kick things up. Looking back, I can’t say it was too bad of an idea, because I really thought it was much improved in flavor when I sampled it again back in June.

So before I tried the latest vintage of this funky ale I was wondering - would Ommegang follow the same pattern here, or would they go for more flavor right from the get go?

As I was pouring, I started to get the first hints that things may be a bit different this time around. Intense smells were evident - grassy and earthy tones equally matched by fragrant lemons. Exciting! As I finished the pour, I was left with a beautiful snow white head capping a murky and pale yellow brew.

With just my first taste, I could tell my intuition was right. The grassy (slightly bitter) flavors were definitely strong and nicely paired with funky earth-like yeasty flavors. It was funk worthy of any barnyard as far as I’m concerned!  Pale malts were providing a subtle backbone for this brew while bringing a touch of honey sweetness to the party. The mouthfeel was crisp with plenty of fizz - but the brew wasn’t overly carbonated by any means. And lest I forget, that same lemony flavor I smelled is showing it’s presence throughout this brew. Earthy flavors linger long after the rather (dry finish).

I enjoyed this years vintage MUCH more off the bat then I did last years. It’s complex and very drinkable. I can’t wait to see if it improves in the same way!

Cellar Outlook: I think it’s going to great! I expect the same kind of improvement and further Brett development that I saw in the ‘07 vintage.

Next Tasting: December 2008

  1. Agreed on all points. This year’s batch is far more robust than last year’s, and it does have excellent aging qualities.
