Another Round of Aged Beer Tasting Updates (Part 1)

I’m so far behind on my tasting updates I had to break this into two parts to get through ‘em all!

As always, my results were a bit of a mixed bag….

Smuttynose Scotch Ale (Six Month) - The sweet malt flavors have started to pull back letting the peat smoke really come to the forefront. It’s a bit unbalanced in flavor now, unfortunately.

North Coast Old Rasputin (One Year) - Still holding up beautifully. Almost all the astringency is gone and the alcohol is much less noticeable.

Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout (One Year) - Held up a little better then I thought it would, but that wasn’t enough. It’s still not very good. Drink this brew fresh for sure.

Stoudt’s Fat Dog (One Year) - Flavors are much less intense then a year ago, and there’s a slight sourness starting to come in at the end. I think it’s starting to slip.

Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale (Six Month) - I screwed up a bit here, I was supposed to review this back in June! It’s still one heck of a hopfest - the hoppy smell is a bit less then before but it’s still outrageously bitter! The malt presence is definitely more noticeable now.

Alaskan Barleywine Ale (Six Month) - Bitter, but not intenesely so. The malt flavors are really shining here, especially the dark fruit notes.

Sierra Nevada Bigfoot (Six Month) - I don’t think this beer has changed even the slightest bit. It’s still really damn good, but very much like some kind of pale ale.

  1. The sourness in the Fat Dog is worrisome, it could indicate that Stoudts has problems sanitizing their equipment and bottles, not something you expect to come from a commercial brewery.
