A Few Beer Cellaring Links From Around The Web….

It’s just waayyy too hot right now for just the beginning of summer. I’m sitting here sweating my….. err let’s just say I’m sweating a lot. It’s topping out at about 94 degrees or so today here in Upstate NY, which just isn’t right. I wasn’t going to write at all this evening, but then I cracked open a bottle of Dogfish Heads Palo Santo Marron ….. and wow. What a brew! Tasting notes to come later this week on that one.

Needless to say, PSM has inspired to get me up long enough to deliver my latest round of cellaring/vintage brew links. Enjoy!

Thanks to Nate’s Beer and Brewing Blog for turning me on to this amazing pub in Stockholm, Sweden. It’s called the Akkurat, and there’s probably not a better place outside of Belgium to try an aged Lambic or Gueuze beer. Be sure to check out the beer menu! Hopefully, when I get over to Europe in a year or two I’ll be able to pay a visit. It looks like one hell of a place to knock back a few.

A bit closer to me is the Brickskeller in Washington DC, where C’Ville Beer Geek was able to enjoy a 2001 Anchor Old Foghorn Barleywine. One heck of a beer list there, for sure!

Even more thanks to Al over at Hop Talk for pointing out this article describing some recent research into beer freshness conducted by a few South American beer scientists. The research group was able to hold off the staling of beer (pilsners, to be exact) by using a chemical to manipulate Maillard reactions in the aging brew. It’s probably not a technique that US craft brews will be getting into any time soon (or ever), but it’s still an interesting look into the chemistry behind the aging process.

For another perspective on this research, you can check out Taking The Bite Out Of Bad Brews over at Philly.com

It’s always nice to see a fellow beer blogger enjoying a vintage brew. In this case, the blog is Beer By Bike, and the beer in question is an Allagash Musette.

  2. Hello,

    I love your website.

There are not many crime novels based on beer, so I thought you might be interested in mine.

    It’s called Beer Money.

    So what’s it about?

A brewery executive has gone missing. Or has he? Joe Abbott is paid by the man’s wife with a beer-sodden cheque to find out the truth.

In doing so he locks horns with dodgy nightclub owners, a toupeed beer baron, and endless eccentrics - plus, of course, a wild pig - all in the twisted pursuit of a stash of missing money.

And he has time for a beer or ten along the way.

A link to the book can be found at: http://www.zeus-publications.com/beer_money.htm

Anyway - it’s a book you might like.

    Yours sincerely,

    Matthew Freeman
