Would you pay $1000 for a six-pack?

Somebody would. And did.

On a recently concluded auction over at Ebay, some beer maniac with way too much disposable income paid $1005 for a lousy six bottles of beer. Six bottles! The winner couldn’t even actually wait for the auction to be over, and just used Ebay’s “buy it now option” to scoop the six-pack up.

Of course the beer in question was somewhat special. It was one bottle from each year’s release of Stone’s Vertial Epic Series. For those of you not familiar with the concept, the Vertical Epic is a yearly release of a cellarable beer, each designed to be aged past 12/12/12, each one different from the last. They started with a release on 2/2/2, and each release after that is on the next month, day, and year. This year’s release was the sixth in the series, and was released on 7/7/7. The idea of the series is that after the last beer is released, you can try all 11 of them in one grand vertical tasting.

Now I have to admit the earlier beers in this series are also pretty high on my beer wish-list. But even given how beer-obsessed I am, there’s just no way I could bring myself to spend that much for six friggin beers.

For those of you familiar with Ebay, you may recall that selling alcohol is somewhat frowned upon over there. This auction, and others like it, skirt around the rules by defining themselves as bottle collecting memorabilia auctions, with the fact that there’s still alcohol in the bottles being incidental (go to collectibles-breweriana-bottles to see the current listings). If you are looking to super-charge your cellar collection, it’s worth checking in here every now and then, you might just find the beer of your dreams. Last time I was on I saw a collection of vintage Thomas Hardy Ales up for bid, as well as some recent limited release beers by the Lost Abbey brewery.

Just please don’t pay $1000 for a six-pack.

Special thanks to Stan over at Appelation Beer for breaking the news on this auction.

  3. I should check and see if my Blue Beaver Beer is worth anything!
Question: If you buy beer (sorry, a set of collector bottles) online, how will transport not subject the contents to temperatures and experiences that will be harmful?
