Six Month Tasting Notes: Four Beers Cellaring Well… (Part 1)
By jason on Feb 20, 2008 in Aging Well, Beer Tastings, Featured
Here’s the latest updates to my tasting notes. For this round, I’ve updated the notes on nine different cellared brews, encompassing a pretty wide range of styles. Here’s the links - starting with the first four that held up the best.
Unibroue 15th Anniversary Ale - Big fruity flavors showing no signs of slowing down, fantastic!
North Coast Old Rasputin - Much more balanced and drinkable now, the beautiful roasted flavors are really showing through.
Dogfish Head Midas Touch - The heavy grape flavor is starting to fade away, revealing another layer of beautiful, subtler flavors in the process.
Victory Golden Monkey - Much darker then before, this brew’s banana and clove flavors are continuing to intensify.
I’ll be back tomorrow with some beers that aren’t faring quite so well….
Jason
Is it normal for a beer like Golden Monkey to get darker with age?
It’s nice to hear that Midas Touch loses some of that grape edge with time. I’m glad I put a few aside.
I love hearing about how specific beers have fared in your aging process!

Hi Keith, thanks for writing in. I love your site, and quickly added your blog onto my links.
I was a bit surprised by the Golden Monkey getting darker. I have to admit, I started to wonder if my initial reporting was a bit off when I first saw the color of the aged brew. I’m sure further tastings down the road will shed a little light on the matter.
I was pretty happy with the Midas Touch results myself! I’m really looking forward to seeing where it goes.
Thanks for the kind words!

Jason,
Have been meaning to email you for a while. First up, thanks so much for a great resource devoted to cellaring beer. I come from a wine retailing background (amongst other things) and I am certain that in many instances the whole beer cellaring thing has just as much merit as holding back wine.
But….to run a specific query by you. Any views on the 16? I’m drinking a Feb 2007 bottling now, and whilst a very solid beer, doesn’t quite seem to have the weight to really drink well beyond say early 2009. Any thoughts?
cheers and thanks!
