Flipping through August 2008’s issue of Beer Advocate Mag…

As usual, the latest issue of Beer Advocate is well done, informative, and fun to read. The “Ask the beer geek” feature had a couple of questions on beer aging and cellaring which were answered by pointing the asker to the Cellaring 101 section of BeerAdvocate.com. There was also a nice profile of Brookly Brewery brewmaster Garrett Oliver, who you may remember from the recent NY times article on pairing vintage beers with food at the Gramercy Tavern.
Of the most interest to beer aging enthusiasts in this issue is the review section, which profiled several beers which might be cool to cellar. Of particular interest were the following:
From De Proef Brouwerij in Belgium, there was Lozen Boer Abt, a Belgian Quad coming in at 10% ABV. It says “Legend of the Cow Smuggler” on the bottle for some reason. It should be an absolute beast in the cellar. The same brewery is also gives us Reinaert Flemish Wild Ale, an ale partially fermented by the very distinctive Brett yeast. AT 9% ABV, this distinctive brew has a good shot to hold it’s own over a year or two.
Back here in the states, O’Fallon’s Whiskey Barrel Smoked Porter is a little lean for the cellar at a somewhat low 7% ABV. However, it’s chock full of smokey goodness which will help give some legs.
It may be a huge longshot to improve any, but I’m going to give Sam Adam’s Imperial Pilsner a try anyway. A huge 8.8% ABV (huge for this style, anyway) give it a fighting shot.
Finally, Ithaca Brewery in Upstate NY (Not too far from me) gives a pair of somewhat experimental Belgian-styled brews. The 9%ABV IPAbbey is described as a “Hoppy Tripel Ale”, and the White Gold is a “Strong Pale Wheat Ale”. I can’t wait to try them both!
That’s all for now, have a great weekend. I’ll kick a couple back for you.
