Six Month Tasting Notes: …. And A Couple Beers Not Doing So Well (Part 2)

And now for the bad news.

Two of my precious brews just aren’t doing well. Such a shame, since I had such high hopes. I’m sure the folks over at Dogfish had high hopes too, because both of the beers crashing and burning right now in my cellar are from them.

Dogfish Head Black and Blue - My worst fears realized. Nearly all the fruity esters have faded away, and there just isn’t enough of a malt backbone to make up for the missing flavor. All that remains is a big tart/sour finish, which is overwhelming without fruit flavor to counter it. Such a shame, I can’t see this brew recovering now.

Dogfish Head Immort Ale - Cellaring has thrown this beer completely out of whack. Some of the interesting flavors have subsided, leaving a big bad smokey blast. It was pretty rough to drink. Thinking positively, smoke flavors will subside over time, so there’s a chance this brew will come back down the road.

I’ve got more cellar updates coming in next week, stay tuned!
