June Tasting Updates - Allagash, Bear Republic, Ommegang, Rogue, Goose Island

Here’s my latest batch of aged beer tastings. As usual, I had a mixed batch of success and failure.

Ommegang Ommegeddon - Six month tasting - Six months have immensely improved this beer. Complex and subtle, it was really fun to drink. Increased Brett character has helped this brew round out very well.

Bear Republic Hop Rod Rye - One year tasting - This complex IPA has been the surprise of my cellar so far - there’s no way I thought it’d be this good after a year. Even though this brew has lost a bit of its hop bite, the malty/rye base is coming through stronger and more complex every time I taste it.

Rogue Brutal Bitter - One year tasting -  It breaks my heart, but this is a brew that’s just slipping away. The hops are fading quick, and there’s no malt base to step up in their place. Drink this one fresh, I think.

Goose Island Snow Goose Christmas Ale - Six month tasting - Holding steady with very little change over the past six months.

Allagash Tripel Reserve - One year tasting - I really don’t know what’s going on here. The first time I tasted it, it was a bit on the dry side. The second time it was sweet. This third time it was back to dry. I haven’t been this confused since my wedding day (a joke!). No matter what else is happening, the fruity esters in this brew seem to be fading. This doesn’t portent well for future tastings…

  1. Was the Ommegeddon a six month tasting from when it was brewed, or six months from the date printed on it to drink at?

I know the bottle I bought was brewed in June 2007 and it said on the label not to drink it until 6 months had passed to allow the brett to work.

  2. Hi Aaron, I have to admit that sometimes it’s a bit confusing when I talk about six month tastings.

In this case I meant six months after my first tasting, so the beer was a year old.
